The capelin (Mallotus villosus villosus) is a small fish (15 cm maximum) that lives in cold waters. It is brownish-yellow on the back, silver-gray on the sides and white on the belly. Capelin are recognizable by their stocky body and large head (large, bulging eyes and barbel under the mouth).
Capelin gather in schools whose biomass can reach several million tons. They live between the surface and a depth of 300 meters.
Whales, seals, cod, squid, mackerel, killer whales and seabirds are all predators of capelin, which is also an essential link in the Atlantic cod food chain.
Herring are one of capelin's main competitors, notably because they share the same diet, but also because herring feed on capelin fry.
Capelin feed on dense plankton at the edge of the ice cap. Larger specimens also eat krill and other crustaceans, as well as small fish.
Mainly used in fish soups, capelin is prized for its fragile white flesh that easily falls apart. Its pleasant taste is close to that of herring.
